Higher energy bills in Bangladesh are adding pressure to budgets, but they are also pushing businesses toward rooftop solar panels and battery storage systems as tools to lower expenses and limit disruption from power problems.
For factories and other heavy electricity users, June tariff increases have changed the math. Clean energy projects now look less optional and more essential to day-to-day operations.
In June, the government changed electricity rates as the power system struggled with expensive fuel imports and a growing mismatch between what electricity costs to produce and what customers are charged, GreentechLead reported.
The outlet noted that the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis said the resulting imbalance amounts to a structural deficit of about BDT 5 ($0.04) for every kilowatt-hour sold.

Among the hardest hit by the situation and its impacts are industrial users. For facilities with approved loads of up to 5 megawatts, the off-peak rate rose from BDT 9.75 ($0.079) to BDT 11.56 ($0.093) per kilowatt-hour, while the peak rate climbed from BDT 13.62 ($0.11) to BDT 16.06 ($0.13).
Meanwhile, the IEEFA put rooftop solar generation costs at roughly BDT 3.5 ($0.028) to 4 ($0.032) per kilowatt-hour, implying savings of at least BDT 7.56 ($0.061) per kilowatt-hour against the new daytime industrial tariff.
Going solar is also one of the best ways many households can save money on home energy. Readers who want to explore their options can use EnergySage‘s free tools to get quick solar installation estimates and compare quotes.
The shift matters because Bangladesh is leaning more heavily on imported liquefied natural gas, coal, and oil as domestic gas production declines. That dependence passes global fuel-price volatility through to businesses and raises the cost of making garments and other goods.

And the increases are not limited to businesses and product prices. Households using more than 75 kilowatt-hours a month have seen their bills rise by at least 18.05% as well.
With solar electricity priced well below peak grid power, consumers have a chance to reduce energy spending and use less fossil-fuel-based electricity.
Some businesses are adding rooftop solar, combining it with battery storage, and replacing inefficient equipment, according to Greentech Lead.
Because the BDT 16.06-per-kilowatt-hour peak charge applies from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., companies can charge batteries with cheaper daytime solar and draw on that stored power during the costliest evening window.

If you’re considering your own options in the U.S., EnergySage’s solar map shows the average cost of a home solar panel system on a state-by-state level, along with details on solar incentives in each state. Together, those resources can help people get the best prices for rooftop solar panels and access available incentives.
Adding battery storage to a solar setup is also one of the best ways to protect your home during outages, save money on energy, and go off-grid. You can explore EnergySage‘s free tools for information about home battery storage options, including competitive installation estimates.
EnergySage’s free services can be especially valuable for shoppers trying to compare offers without doing all the legwork themselves. With EnergySage’s help, the average person can save up to $10,000 on solar purchases and installations.
As Greentech Lead described an IEEFA analyst’s take, “although consumers cannot control government-set electricity tariffs, they can reduce their electricity bills by adopting clean energy technologies.” For many businesses in Bangladesh, that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
