Heelstone Renewable Energy, a Qualitas Energy company, has officially acquired the 188 MW Cypress Pointe Solar project located in Sabine County, Texas. This strategic acquisition within the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) market underscores the company’s aggressive expansion strategy in the United States. The project, which was advanced through its early and mid-stage development phases by St. Louis-based Azimuth Renewables, represents a significant addition to Heelstone’s growing utility-scale portfolio.
The Cypress Pointe Solar project is slated for commercial operation in 2029. This acquisition follows a period of rapid growth for Heelstone, which has developed or brought into operation more than 80 solar photovoltaic projects totaling over 1.2 GW since its inception in 2012. The transaction is part of a broader trend of increased M&A activity in the solar sector; according to Mercom’s 1H and Q2 2026 Solar Funding and M&A report, approximately 25.2 GW of solar projects were acquired globally in the first half of 2026, marking a significant increase from the 19.9 GW recorded during the same period in 2025.
Heelstone’s recent activity also includes financial closings for three solar projects totaling 86 MW in July 2026. Furthermore, its parent company, Qualitas Energy, has been active internationally, securing approximately €53 million ($61 million) for a 117 MW solar portfolio in Poland and acquiring a 164 MW development-stage project in Illinois earlier this year.
For EPC contractors and developers, the acquisition highlights the high demand for de-risked, development-stage assets. As IPPs like Heelstone continue to build out their pipelines, the focus shifts toward securing reliable engineering, procurement, and construction partners capable of navigating the complexities of the SPP market. The scale of this project (188 MW) suggests a significant upcoming opportunity for balance-of-system suppliers and construction firms specializing in large-scale solar infrastructure.
Heelstone is now expected to focus on advancing the project through final permitting and grid interconnection milestones before moving into the construction phase. While the 2029 target date provides a long lead time, the project will likely undergo competitive bidding for EPC services in the coming years.
