As India accelerates its transition toward high-efficiency renewable energy, the demand for advanced photovoltaic technology has surged. Navgrun, a key player in the solar solutions space, has officially announced its strategic move to establish a 1.2 GW annual manufacturing capacity for TOPCon G12R solar wafers and cells. This expansion is a significant step in the company’s growth trajectory, building upon its existing 700 MW TOPCon G12R solar module manufacturing operations.
The proposed facility will focus on the production of solar wafers, cells, modules, and building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) solutions. This move is particularly timely given the current state of India’s solar PV manufacturing landscape. According to the Mercom India State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 2026 report, India added nearly 119 GW of module manufacturing capacity and over 9 GW of cell manufacturing capacity in 2025. Furthermore, as of July 22, 2026, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has enlisted 31.76 GW of solar cell capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).
Despite these gains, a significant technology gap persists. Much of the existing domestic cell capacity relies on older monocrystalline technology, while project developers are increasingly mandating TOPCon technology for new utility-scale tenders. This creates a supply-demand mismatch that Navgrun aims to mitigate through its new upstream integration.
For EPC contractors and solar developers, the entry of more domestic players into the TOPCon cell space is a positive development. Currently, the industry faces a shortage of domestic-content-compliant cells, which often forces developers to rely on imports or face project delays. By expanding into wafer and cell manufacturing, Navgrun and similar manufacturers are helping to stabilize the supply chain. However, industry experts caution that while capacity is growing, Indian manufacturers must still focus on improving quality and cost competitiveness to match Chinese benchmarks and reduce dependency on imported equipment and raw materials.
The success of this 1.2 GW facility will depend on the speed of commissioning and the ability to stabilize production at scale. As India continues to strengthen its domestic solar ecosystem, the shift toward backward integration—specifically into wafers and ingots—will be the defining factor for the sector’s long-term viability. The Indian renewable energy sector remains a high-growth market, but long-term success will require moving beyond policy-supported demand toward global cost and quality leadership.
