With the clean energy transition now fully underway, projects are materializing thick and fast. Countries have clean energy targets that they want to meet within certain time frames, and they are actively working toward reducing carbon emissions. European countries have shown a willingness to rely on foreign companies in the execution of projects, and they have also displayed a great willingness to work with each other in projects. In the current energy landscape, companies are forced to be more strategic or meticulous regarding how they develop facilities because of the integration of technology in the industry. One of the most active companies in 2026, Ameresco Sunel, moved ahead with the construction of a 58 MWp photovoltaic project in Romania.
Ameresco is a leading energy infrastructure company that has developed a reputation for delivering integrated solutions with the aim of creating reliable power and advancing or modernizing infrastructure. Solar and wind developers are looking for ways to replace old resources with new ones that ensure better energy generation and perform at a higher level compared to conventional strategies.
Ameresco is well respected as a full lifecycle partner, delivering over $15 billion in solutions and contracting over 5GW of energy resources since its founding in 2000. The company is headquartered in Massachusetts but has a significant presence globally as it delivers projects across North America and Europe.
Ameresco Sunel Energy SA, a collaborative effort between Ameresco and SUNEL Group, aims to complete the construction of a solar photovoltaic facility in Iratosu, Arad County, Romania. The increase in the number of partnerships in the contemporary landscape is a result of companies recognizing that the chances of success are higher when they share the risk and financial responsibilities involved in the execution of a project.
SUNEL Group is a leading provider of integrated and innovative solutions for renewable energy projects, which is focused on Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and energy efficiency. The company is headquartered in Athens and operates in regional offices located in London, Valencia, Milan, Bucharest, and Tashkent.
The company has developed a reputation for not only delivering energy projects but also assisting various countries’ economies, as it gives work opportunities for its residents. According to reports, SUNEL has successfully developed, designed, and executed more than 2 GW of solar projects worldwide. Its current focus is on executing 2+ GW of solar projects across Greece, the UK, Spain, Italy, Romania, and Uzbekistan.
According to a press release from Ameresco, the agreement states that Ameresco Sunel Energy SA will provide engineering procurement and construction (EPC) services, along with ongoing operation and maintenance (O&M), for the Iratosu solar facility.
The project is owned and developed by TDI Renewables Ltd, a UK-registered international energy company that is focused on utility-scale solar, wind, and energy storage. Ameresco Sunel Energy SA is expected to manage the project through each phase, from design and procurement to construction, commissioning, and long-term operations.
There was great excitement from the parties involved following the completion of the collaboration between Ameresco and SUNEL Group. Pete Christakis, Chief Operating Officer of Ameresco, stated the following:
“This project marks another milestone in our expanding presence in Romania and reinforces the role Ameresco Sunel Energy SA continues to play in the broader build-out of renewable energy infrastructure across Central and Eastern Europe. We’re proud to build on our track record in the region and deepen our contribution to the country’s long-term sustainability goals.”
