India’s solar power generation has witnessed a monumental shift, reaching 62.8 billion units (BU) in Q2 2026, according to the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). This represents a significant 45.9% year-over-year (YoY) increase compared to the 43 BU generated in the same period in 2025. This growth trajectory is fundamentally linked to the record-breaking 15.3 GW of capacity additions recorded in Q1 2026, which included 12.6 GW of large-scale solar projects now contributing to the national grid.
The quarterly generation figures showed consistent performance, with 20.9 BU in April, 21.6 BU in May, and 20.3 BU in June. Rajasthan maintained its position as the leading solar power-generating state, contributing 19.4 BU, or 30.9% of the national total. Gujarat followed closely with 14.3 BU, representing 22.8% of national generation and showcasing a staggering 141.6% YoY growth. Together, these two states contributed 33.7 BU, underlining their dominance in the Indian solar market.
Regional analysis reveals that the northern region led the country with 22.3 BU (35.5% of the total), followed by the western region with 21.2 BU (33.8%) and the southern region with 18.6 BU (29.7%). Collectively, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra accounted for approximately 79% of India’s total solar generation during the quarter.
For EPC contractors and solar developers, these figures validate the strategic importance of focusing on high-irradiation states. With cumulative installed solar capacity reaching 163.7 GW as of June 2026—a 40.7% YoY increase—the sector is clearly maturing. Solar now accounts for 29.7% of India’s total installed power capacity and 56.4% of its renewable energy capacity. Developers should note the consistent generation growth across all regions, which suggests that project performance is meeting or exceeding expectations, thereby improving the bankability of large-scale solar assets.
As the India renewable energy sector continues to expand, the focus will likely shift from pure capacity addition to grid integration and storage-backed generation. With 115 BU generated in the first half of 2026 alone, the infrastructure must now handle higher peak loads. Stakeholders should watch for further policy interventions aimed at strengthening inter-state transmission systems (ISTS) to ensure that the power generated in high-yield states like Rajasthan and Gujarat is efficiently evacuated to demand centers across the country.
