Jack’s Solar Garden, a US-based agrivoltaics research site, combines crop cultivation with electricity generation. Byron Kominek covered roughly five acres of the 24-acre Colorado property with 3,276 solar panels. The panels generate around 2 GWh of electricity annually and are mounted above growing crops. Researchers study microclimates beneath the array and how changing shade conditions affect plant growth. A single axis tracking system shifts the panels through the day to follow sunlight. Among the crops grown at the site are flax and clary sage, which are developing under cooler and somewhat more moist conditions. Sprout City Farms leads the agricultural work, while Audubon Rockies contributed more than 3,000 native perennial plantings. Panels positioned at roughly six and eight feet enable day-to-day farming activities to take place underneath.
