Stella Juva combines solar power, a mobile medical clinic and off-road capability for healthcare missions far from hospitals.
Students in the Netherlands have unveiled a solar-powered ambulance designed to bring medical care to remote areas where roads, electricity, and fuel are scarce. Solar Team Eindhoven revealed their vehicle, called Stella Juva, last month.
The team is now getting ready to test it in Kenya this August with the humanitarian group Amref Health Africa.
Built by 23 students from Eindhoven University of Technology, Stella Juva is designed as a mobile medical clinic rather than a conventional ambulance that carries patients to hospitals. The team developed it for communities where reaching a healthcare facility can require long journeys across difficult terrain.
Solar panels power both the vehicle’s electric motor and the medical equipment inside. The system uses 542 solar cells and a 50-kWh battery, so stored energy can keep things running even when there is no sunlight.
