University of Newcastle, an Australia-based university, has reported a new way to recover silver from end-of-life PV panels. Researchers recovered almost 100% of the silver during the world’s first continuous pilot-scale flotation trial for solar-panel recycling. The trial processed 22 kgs of solar-cell material recovered from approximately 460 kgs of retired panels. After processing, the recovered product made up just 1.25% of the original material but contained more than 80 times the original silver concentration. The researchers also found that the flotation-based process could be three to five times less expensive than conventional acid-leaching methods. Instead of using acid, the process relies on water, air and small amounts of chemicals to separate and recover the silver. Australia is expected to have more than one million tonnes of waste panels by 2050, containing an estimated 300-500 tonnes of silver.
