Millions of people across the Northern Hemisphere will experience a solar eclipse this Wednesday, August 12, 2026, and farmers and rural communities in parts of the United States will have a chance to watch a partial version of the event. According to NASA projections, Alaska and the Northeast will have the strongest U.S. visibility, while coverage will become progressively smaller farther south and west. For agriculture, the phenomenon is primarily a farm-safety and rural-interest event, particularly for producers, employees and families who expect to be outdoors while the eclipse is underway.
The eclipse will be total only along a relatively narrow path crossing the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland and Spain. No part of the continental United States will experience totality. Instead, the Moon will cover a portion of the Sun, ranging from only a few percent in some locations to more than one-third in interior Alaska. That distinction is especially important because the Sun will remain dangerously bright throughout the event in the United States, meaning approved eye protection must be used at all times when looking directly toward it.

For U.S. agriculture, Alaska will offer some of the strongest views. Fairbanks is expected to reach roughly 37% solar coverage, while Anchorage could see about 28% and Juneau approximately 17%. In the Northeast, northern Maine will stand out: Bangor could reach about 24%, followed by Portland at roughly 19%. Farther south, the effect becomes more modest, with Boston around 16%, New York City 9%, Philadelphia 7% and Washington, D.C., about 4%.
In Alaska, the eclipse will occur during the morning. Anchorage is expected to see the partial eclipse begin around 7:36 a.m., peak at 8:21 a.m. and end at 9:09 a.m. Fairbanks should begin around 7:37 a.m., reach maximum coverage at 8:27 a.m. and finish around 9:18 a.m. These hours overlap with normal morning activity for many farms, ranches and other outdoor operations, making advance safety communication particularly useful for crews working outside.
In the eastern United States, the event arrives during the early afternoon. Bangor is expected to begin seeing the eclipse at 12:54 p.m., with maximum coverage at 1:53 p.m. Boston reaches its maximum around 1:55 p.m., while New York peaks near 1:54 p.m. The percentages are not large enough to turn daylight into darkness, but the event could still attract attention from farm employees, families, rural schools and agricultural communities working outdoors during the observation window.

The key message for producers is straightforward: ordinary sunglasses are not safe for directly viewing a partial solar eclipse. Specialized eclipse viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard should be used. Looking directly at the Sun without proper protection can cause serious and potentially permanent eye damage, even when much of the solar disk is covered by the Moon.
The same precautions apply to equipment commonly found around farms and rural properties. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes should never be pointed at the Sun for direct viewing unless they are equipped with appropriate solar filters installed on the front of the optical system. Eclipse glasses alone should not be used to look through an unfiltered magnifying device. Families without approved viewers can instead use indirect observation techniques, including a pinhole projector that casts an image of the Sun onto another surface.
Weather will determine how much of the event can actually be observed from individual farms. Cloud cover can obscure the Sun completely even in locations with favorable eclipse geometry. Producers planning to watch should therefore check local conditions shortly before the event rather than relying only on regional forecasts. For agricultural operations, there is no need to interrupt normal fieldwork solely because of the partial eclipse, but employers may want to remind workers not to look directly at the Sun without certified protection.

Unlike a total eclipse, there will be no safe naked-eye viewing period anywhere in the continental United States during this event. The Sun will never be completely blocked there, so protective viewers must remain in place whenever someone looks directly at it. That is the most important distinction for rural audiences who may remember the dramatic total solar eclipse that crossed parts of the United States in April 2024.
For those outside the viewing area, dealing with clouds or simply unable to stop field operations, NASA plans live coverage of the August 12 event beginning at approximately 1:15 p.m. Eastern Time. The broadcast is expected to provide views from locations along the eclipse path and scientific explanations of what is happening as the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun.

For U.S. agriculture, the August 12 eclipse will not change crop development or require special livestock or field-management measures, particularly given the relatively modest solar coverage across the country. Its relevance is instead practical and local: a rare astronomical event occurring during the workday for thousands of farmers and rural employees. From Alaska to Maine and across parts of the Northeast, the best way to experience it will be simple – know the local timing, watch the weather and, above all, protect your eyes.
