The International Renewable Energy Agency projects that the value of materials recovered from retired solar panels will grow sharply over the next three decades, creating a major opportunity for the solar industry and recycling sector.
IRENA estimates that recovered materials will be worth US$810 million by 2030 before increasing to US$6 billion annually by 2040. The market could exceed US$20 billion by 2050, when more than 400 GW of solar capacity is expected to reach the end of its operating life.
Metals drive recovery value
Aluminium and silver are expected to account for almost half of the total recovery value by 2050. Aluminium is projected to represent the largest share, while silver could contribute about one third of the value.
Glass, silicon and copper will make up much of the remaining material stream. These resources could help reduce pressure on raw material supply chains as solar manufacturing expands.
Recovered metals could meet up to 20% of future aluminium and copper demand for new solar equipment. Recycled silver could cover about 70% of demand from new solar manufacturing.
Infrastructure challenge
The growth in panel waste will require substantial investment in collection, transport and treatment infrastructure. IRENA estimates that more than 150 dedicated treatment facilities and over 120,000 heavy truck trips could be needed during the coming decade to manage retired modules.
The agency says recycling alone will not be enough to control the growth of solar waste. Manufacturers will also need to improve product design, extend module lifespans and support the reuse of functioning panels.
The development of a circular solar economy could create new industrial opportunities while strengthening access to materials needed for Africa’s expanding renewable energy market.
