A sustainable innovation is flourishing on a Massachusetts farm, where 832 solar panels have been installed over agricultural crops. Although social media has spread that these panels boosted berry production, the reality is different: the documented crops are broccoli, spinach, and sweet corn.
The agrivoltaic project at Joe Czajkowski’s farm in Hadley began in July 2023, according to the United States Department of Energy. The 832 panels, arranged over nearly one hectare, generate approximately 445 kilowatts of energy while allowing agricultural use of the land.
These panels are mobile, adjusting to the movement of the Sun throughout the day. In the first year, broccoli grew under their shade; in 2024, spinach and more broccoli were incorporated, and in 2025, sweet corn.
This system, known as agrivoltaics, allows a plot to produce both energy and food, maximizing land use.
The design includes rows of panels separated by eight meters, ideal for the passage of tractors and other agricultural machinery, ensuring that usual tasks like plowing and planting can be carried out without hindrance.
Important sources such as InSPIRE and Hyperion Systems confirm the mentioned crops, with no evidence of berries under the panels. There is no documentation supporting improvements in the size or sweetness of berries.
Studies of partial shade indicate benefits for certain crops, such as reducing water stress, but excessive shade could negatively impact photosynthesis.
In another project in Massachusetts, a UMass Amherst study on cranberries noted that moderate shade helped conserve water but also reduced photosynthesis and antioxidants.
This study showed that panels can have short-term effects, but more time is needed to evaluate the long-term impacts on crops.
The true demonstration of the success of the Czajkowski farm lies in its ability to generate electricity while continuing agricultural production, providing an additional income. Joe Czajkowski highlighted that he receives payments for the electricity and a discount on his energy bills.
