Solar energy developers continue to take advantage of the technological innovation that has transformed the way projects are approached. Because of advanced technology and in-depth scientific research, companies can now pursue captivating and ambitious projects that would not have been possible through conventional ways of energy generation. One of the standout additions to the sector in recent years is combined energy generation and storage facilities, which ensure consistent energy availability where generation is not possible because of a lack of sunlight. Sunrun recently raised $267 million through a new securitization backed by residential solar and battery assets.
As the clean energy transition is now fully underway, Sunrun has been one of the important companies in the United States, with many people assuming it can assist the nation in meeting its targets. The company is recognized as America’s largest provider of home battery storage, solar, and home-to-grid power plants, which is a huge achievement considering the abundance of companies in the U.S.
Sunrun is a pioneer of home energy systems that are offered through a no-upfront-cost subscription model. The company empowers customers in the United States with more energy control, security, and independence. Many people were critical of solar and wind energy initiatives because they are dependent on specific weather.
However, companies like Sunrun have assisted the nation in overcoming its intermittency issues by creating blueprints for combined solar and battery storage facilities. The company has earned respect for supporting the grid by providing on-demand dispatchable power that assists in preventing blackouts and lowering energy costs.
One of the biggest challenges that developers face in the execution of clean energy projects is a lack of funds. However, many countries’ governments are now showing a greater willingness to fund companies with the understanding that there are objectives to meet and a need to reduce carbon emissions.
According to a press release from Sunrun, the company has priced a securitization of leases and power purchase agreements. The securitization is the company’s seventeenth securitization since 2015 and the second one issued in 2026, which speaks to how active it has been this year.
The securitization of leases and power purchase agreements is the financial process of pooling long-term, predictable income streams from renewable energy contracts, such as solar panel leases or electricity sales, before proceeding to convert them into tradable, bond-like securities sold to institutional investors.
Since the energy industry evolves at a rapid pace, developers are aiming to capitalize on this particular moment and generate as much revenue as they can.
Sunrun is highly determined to maintain the momentum that it has been enjoying in recent years. After the recent securitization reached by the company, Danny Abajian, Sunrun’s Chief Financial Officer, stated the following:
“This $267 million public securitization involves refinancing a seasoned portfolio of residential solar assets. We appreciate our financial partners’ continued confidence in our high quality assets and servicing standards. This securitization was raised with Class A notes being priced at a 200 basis point credit spread, a 20 basis point improvement from the public Class A-1 Notes in Sunrun’s April 2026 securitization.”
The securitization was structured with one class of A-rated notes (the “Class A Notes”) and one class of BB-rated notes (the “Class B Notes”). Sunrun retained Class B notes while the $267 million Class A Notes were priced with a coupon of 6.28%. The pricing of the Class A Notes represents a spread of 200 basis points and a 6.33% yield.
Sunrun finds itself in a familiar position where it is leading the way in an action that other companies may adopt. The company is well-positioned to become the leader of next-generation solar plus storage projects.
