The Directorate General for Energy has issued the official resolution granting Naturgy Renovables Canarias, SLU administrative authorization to carry out a minor modification to the Agüimes III Photovoltaic Plant. This renewable electricity generation complex, with a capacity of 3,4 MW and located in the municipality of Agüimes, on the island of Gran Canaria, thus takes a definitive technical step in its processing, adapting its infrastructure to the operational and energy transport requirements of the island.
The origins of this action date back to the resolution issued on April 25, 2023, which initially granted the developer administrative authorization and, specifically, a declaration of public utility for the construction and commissioning of the original project on land in Agüimes. However, the evolution of joint evacuation projects in the region has necessitated a subsequent update of the technical parameters initially projected by the energy company.
On May 6, 2026, the developer formally submitted a request to modify the terms of the prior authorization, providing an updated project that includes substantial changes to the energy transformation and transmission infrastructure. The main modification addresses the need to adapt the transformation equipment and medium-voltage switchgear to a new voltage level of 30 kV, an essential requirement for achieving perfect synchronization with the transformer replacement carried out at the assigned connection point in the Montaña del Canónigo Collector Substation. As a direct result of this voltage upgrade, the entire evacuation line planned in the original design of the photovoltaic park will operate at 30 kV instead of 20 kV, ensuring technical compatibility with the electricity distribution and transmission network infrastructure in the southeastern part of the island.
Following the integration of the proposed modifications, the final technical design of the Agüimes III Photovoltaic Plant is configured on-site with very precise specifications. The solar energy production facility comprises 11.043 photovoltaic modules of 360 Wp each, arranged in three horizontal rows, with twenty-seven panels connected in series to optimize radiation capture. The internal conversion and transformation network consists of two specialized substations.
The first of these consists of a 2.465 kVA inverter—limited to 2.200 kVA—and a 2.200 kVA transformer, equipped with a voltage switchgear and a protection switchgear adapted to a service voltage of 30 kV. The second transformer station incorporates a 1.200 kVA inverter along with a transformer of the same power, also equipped with its corresponding electrical switching and protection equipment at 30 kV.
The evacuation of energy from these centers to the central delivery point is channeled through two independent underground lines, constructed with 18/30 kV RHZ1 type aluminum conductors with cross-sections of 3x(1×240) square millimeters, measuring 61 meters and 494 meters in length, respectively. From the delivery center, the evacuation infrastructure continues via an additional 247-meter-long underground conduit, equipped with conductors of similar technical characteristics, which connects directly to the connection point at the Montaña del Canónigo Collector Substation.
This intervention is precisely aligned with the resolution approved on July 7, 2026, which authorized the substantial modification of the Montaña Canóniga Phase II Substation, file ER170079, allowing the replacement of the original transformer with a 66/30 kV, 30 MVA transformer and enabling the dedicated 30 kV switchgear for the circuit originating from this photovoltaic plant in Agüimes. The resolution mandates the required notification to the Agüimes City Council, the Gran Canaria Island Council, Red Eléctrica de España (REE), and the distribution company Edistribución, thus completing another phase in the development of renewable energy infrastructure in Gran Canaria.
