Dorset Council launches solar and battery programme for homeowners and businesses – Dorset Council

Dorset homeowners are being invited to explore whether solar panels and battery storage could help them generate their own renewable electricity and take greater control of their home energy use.
Dorset Council has partnered with Switch Together to launch a new round of its solar scheme. The scheme uses a group-buying approach to help homeowners access competitively priced solar and battery installations from trusted, vetted installers. Last years scheme helped over 200 households to reduce their energy bills.
With many households continuing to look for ways to manage energy costs and improve the energy efficiency of their homes, the scheme offers residents a simple way to explore renewable energy options, with no obligation to go ahead.
Solar panels generate electricity from daylight throughout the year, while battery storage systems can store unused energy generated during the day for use later in the evening. Together, they can help households make greater use of the energy they generate themselves and reduce reliance on electricity from the grid.
The scheme is open to homeowners and businesses across Dorset and is designed to provide clear information about the costs, benefits and suitability of solar and battery technology for different properties.
Cllr Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council and Cabinet Member for Climate, Communications, Performance & Safeguarding, said:
“Many people tell us they are interested in renewable energy but are unsure where to start. This scheme gives residents an easy way to find out whether solar panels and battery storage could be right for their home.
“There is no cost to register interest and no pressure to proceed. It simply provides households with information and access to trusted installers so they can make an informed decision about what works best for them.
“Supporting residents to reduce carbon emissions and improve the energy efficiency of their homes is an important part of our work to respond to the climate and nature crisis while helping to build a more sustainable Dorset.”
Following registration, residents will receive information about the scheme and details of next steps. Homeowners can then decide whether they wish to accept any offer they receive. If homeowners accept their offer a refundable deposit will be required to continue to the next stage.”
The initiative supports Dorset Council’s wider ambitions to respond to the climate and nature crisis and help create more sustainable communities across the county.
Residents can register free of charge at www.switchtogether.co.uk/solar-panels/dorset until 25 September 2026.
