It can power around 47,000 homes.
A 220 MWp solar farm near Foxton, New Zealand, has received Fast-track approval, becoming the 32nd project and eighth renewable energy project approved under the country’s accelerated consenting process.
Genesis Energy lodged the application in February 2026, with approval granted around three and a half months after an independent expert panel was appointed.
The solar farm is expected to generate approximately 345 GWh of renewable electricity each year, enough to power about 47,000 homes, said Minister Chris Bishop said.
“Reliable renewable electricity generation is critical to supporting economic growth and regional resilience,” he said.
Renewable energy projects approved through the Fast-track process will add more than 990 MW of new generation capacity, equivalent to more than 5% of New Zealand’s current generation capacity and enough to power approximately 322,000 households annually.
The Foxton project is expected to create around 100 jobs during construction and contribute directly and indirectly to the local economy, Minister Shane Jones said.
“The project represents a major investment in the region and will help drive regional economic growth whilst advancing New Zealand’s transition to a more reliable and sustainable energy future,” he said.
Minister Simeon Brown said the government’s goal is to provide abundant, affordable and reliable power for New Zealanders.
Electricity demand is expected to increase significantly as households and businesses shift towards electric technologies, he said.
The project will also contribute to the Government’s goal of doubling renewable energy generation by 2050.
Renewables accounted for a record 96.5% of electricity generation in the final three months of last year, whilst additional generation capacity is needed to support a resilient and reliable electricity supply, Brown said.
“Fast-tracking the consenting process to encourage investment in new energy generation is a key part of achieving that 2050 goal,” he said.
