There’s more to sustainable farming than combining solar panels with agriculture (known as Agri-PV). In a project called CircularFarming.IN.NRW, the company SUNfarming GmbH is teaming up with TH Köln (a university) and Nourtec GmbH to test new ideas that combine Agri-PV with hydroponics.
The goal is to find out how well hydroponic farming works under the special conditions created by Agri-PV systems (like the shade from solar panels). The team wants to create new methods for farming that use resources wisely and prepare for the future. They’re focusing on the technical, farming-related, and financial requirements needed to successfully combine these two systems.

To do this, the project will set up and test several demonstration systems under real-world conditions. What they learn will help create a planning guide for designing and building hydroponic systems within Agri-PV projects.
This guide will act as a practical tool to help developers, farmers, and other interested parties make decisions. It will show them which hydroponic systems work best for different Agri-PV setups, and how to plan and run them efficiently.
Through this research, SUNfarming is once again helping to advance sustainable ways of using land. By cleverly combining Agri-PV and hydroponics, the project opens up new possibilities: producing food efficiently while also generating renewable energy, all on the same piece of land.
