Translucent Solar, a US-headquartered module producer, has started scaling up output at its assembly site in South Carolina. The plant, which covers more than 283,000 square feet, is designed for an annual nameplate capacity of 1.2GW, with the company targeting complete operational status by year-end. PV Tech sought clarification from Translucent Solar on its selected n-type technology for the facility but received no reply before publication.
Over the last two months, a wave of domestic manufacturing capacity has come online from various cell and module makers, including SEG Solar’s 4GW heterojunction module facility in Texas, Canadian Solar‘s 6GW HJT cell operation in Indiana, ES Foundry’s 2GW cell capacity addition in South Carolina, and Qcells’ 3.3GW cell output in Georgia. This surge in new annual nameplate capacity follows a report from clean energy finance platform Crux, which noted a rise in clean energy manufacturing during the first half of 2026. Crux attributed the growth largely to the solar supply chain, with solar manufacturing investments climbing 30% from Q1 to Q2 2026, reaching US$893 million.
Augustus Rylands, managing director at Translucent Solar, described Summerville as the initial phase of a longer-term strategy, with plans to move into US-based cell and wafer production in the coming period. He also noted that Section 232 tariffs on polysilicon provide manufacturers like Translucent Solar with the sustained confidence required for large-scale investment.
Detailed discussions on solar PV manufacturing prospects in the US will take place at the PV CellTech USA conference, scheduled for 13-14 October 2026 in San Francisco.
