India added 17.04 GW of renewable energy capacity during the first four months of FY2026-27, from April through July 2026, with solar and wind accounting for more than 96% of the additions, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Solar power led the expansion by a wide margin, with 14.33 GW added during the April-July period. Wind power contributed another 2.04 GW, taking combined solar and wind additions to 16.38 GW.
The latest MNRE data shows that total renewable energy capacity, including large hydro, stood at 291.73 GW as of July 31, 2026. Excluding large hydro, renewable capacity stood at 239.66 GW. 
Solar accounted for around 84% of the renewable capacity added between April and July. India added 14,334.05 MW of solar capacity during the four-month period, taking cumulative installed solar capacity to 164.59 GW by July-end.
Of the cumulative solar capacity, ground-mounted projects accounted for 122.57 GW, while grid-connected rooftop solar stood at 30.74 GW. Hybrid projects contributed 4.77 GW through their solar component, while off-grid solar accounted for 6.51 GW.
The pace of solar additions decelerated sharply in July. The country added 2,442.75 MW of solar capacity during the month, compared with 2.81 GW in May and 5.11 GW in June. The June figure was the highest monthly addition among the three months, according to MNRE data. However, with the remaining months of the year likely to be much less disruptive from Monsoon rains, the pace is expected to pick up sharply. SOme of the slowdown has also been attributed to the implementation of the ALCM scheme from June 1, subsequently modified in July with exceptions that should also enable a pick up.   
The May addition of around 2.81 GW represented a marginal 2.7% decline from the 2.89 GW added in May 2025. The April-June period had already delivered 11.89 GW of solar additions, before another 2.44 GW was added in July. MNRE’s cumulative data shows solar additions of 11,891.30 MW during the first quarter of FY2026-27 and 14,334.05 MW by the end of July.
Wind power remained the second-largest contributor to India’s renewable capacity expansion. India added 2,042.05 MW of wind capacity between April and July, taking cumulative installed wind capacity to 58.14 GW.
July alone saw 693.5 MW of new wind capacity commissioned, making it the strongest month for wind additions in the four-month period. Wind additions during the first three months of the fiscal year stood at 1,348.55 MW, with June contributing 636.35 MW. The May addition of 370.45 MW was also significantly higher than the 233.7 MW installed in May 2025, representing year-on-year growth of about 58.5%. 
The overall pace of renewable capacity addition remained strong in July, when India added 3,136.25 MW across renewable energy technologies, excluding large hydro. Solar contributed 2,442.75 MW, while wind added 693.5 MW. Together, the two technologies accounted for almost the entire monthly addition.
Including large hydro, total renewable capacity addition during July stood at 3,136.25 MW, as no new large-hydro capacity was reported during the month. For the April-July period, total renewable capacity additions, including large hydro, reached 17,037.54 MW. Large hydro contributed 650 MW during the first four months, while small hydro added 10.4 MW. The remainder came from solar, wind and smaller renewable categories.
