Translucent Solar, a U.S.-based manufacturer, has officially initiated the ramp-up phase of its 1.2 GW solar module manufacturing facility located in Summerville, South Carolina. The investment of $15.6 million in the first phase underscores the company’s commitment to scaling domestic production capabilities to meet the surging demand for high-efficiency solar solutions across utility-scale, commercial and industrial (C&I), and residential segments.
The Summerville plant is designed to serve as the cornerstone of Translucent Solar’s multi-year expansion strategy. Beyond module assembly, the company has explicitly outlined a roadmap to integrate upstream manufacturing, including solar cells, wafers, and ingots, into its U.S. operations. According to Managing Director Augustus Rylands, the decision to accelerate production is bolstered by the Section 232 tariffs on polysilicon and its derivatives, which were implemented on August 6, 2026. These trade measures have provided the long-term regulatory certainty required for significant capital allocation in the American solar manufacturing sector.
The facility will employ rigorous quality control protocols, covering raw material qualification, in-line inspections, and comprehensive product traceability. This focus on quality is essential as the company positions itself to compete in a market where 664 GW of new solar capacity was installed globally in 2025, bringing the total operating capacity to approximately 2.9 TW.
For EPC contractors and solar developers, the rise of domestic manufacturing capacity in the U.S. represents a potential shift in supply chain reliability. As global trade scrutiny intensifies—evidenced by recent anti-circumvention inquiries into modules manufactured in Ethiopia and Vietnam—developers are increasingly looking for manufacturing partners that offer transparency and compliance with international trade standards. Translucent Solar expects the Summerville facility to reach full operational capacity by the end of 2026.
