Tesla Appears to Wind Down Solar Roof After Years of High Costs and Limited Demand
Once pitched as the future of residential solar, the sleek roof faced a challenge traditional panels kept winning: delivering power at a lower cost.

Nearly a decade after its high-profile unveiling, Tesla has effectively halted development of Solar Roof – a solar roofing system with photovoltaic cells embedded in tiles designed to resemble premium shingles, terracotta, or slate. Public references to the product have disappeared from the company’s official website.
The page dedicated to Tesla Solar Roof now directs visitors to the company’s general solar energy section. Support pages are being redirected in the same way. Electrek was the first to notice the product’s disappearance, and TechCrunch confirmed that the redirects are active.
At the same time, some installation companies may still offer Solar Roof to customers. Two installers told TechCrunch that they continue to work with the system. One of them clarified that the ability to fulfill an order depends on the schedule of a particular project. This may indicate that remaining inventory is still being used or sold off.
At launch, Tesla planned to install up to 1,000 solar roofs per week. In reality, volumes proved far more modest: in 2022, after several rounds of upgrades and production changes, the pace was estimated at roughly 20–40 installations per week.
One of the main problems was price. Tesla positioned Solar Roof as a solution for people who wanted solar power generation without installing conventional panels on top of an existing roof. The company compared the cost of the system with the combined cost of a new roof and traditional solar modules, but even by that calculation, the project remained too expensive. Some buyers received quotes of around $200,000.
Conventional solar panels gradually became cheaper thanks to mass production of standardized photovoltaic cells and modules. Solar Roof may have used standard silicon cells, but the roofing tiles themselves had a unique design. Tesla needed specialized equipment to manufacture them, while low order volumes increased the cost of each installed system.
The performance of the solar roof was affected by more than just price and complex manufacturing. Reports emerged of inactive roofing tiles warping and the underlayment melting under direct sunlight. Some owners also complained that actual electricity generation was lower than they had expected from a Tesla system.
One possible explanation for insufficient output was overheating. The voltage of solar cells typically declines by about 0.5% for every one-degree Celsius increase in temperature. Traditional panels are generally installed with a gap above the roof, allowing air to circulate and cool the modules.
Tesla Solar Roof’s design also included a ventilation gap, but it was much smaller than in conventional panel-based systems. As a result, heat could build up beneath the roof, reducing photovoltaic cell efficiency in hot weather.
Tesla’s exit from this project does not mean solar roofing will disappear entirely. GAF and Merlin Solar continue to develop similar solutions. Demand may persist in a narrow niche among buyers for whom a roof’s appearance matters just as much as its energy efficiency.
However, the story of Tesla Solar Roof has shown how difficult it is to turn a technologically appealing idea into an affordable mass-market product. Combining the functions of a roof and a home power plant proved significantly more expensive and complex to manufacture and install than conventional solar panels.
