The volunteer has no idea that both people once ran for public office. The only question on the screen is which face looks more competent.
It feels far too thin to mean anything.
Yet that snap pick, made before any conscious thought, lines up with who actually won the race far more often than chance.
So what is a single glance at a stranger’s face really picking up?
A human face is a dense bundle of signals, and the brain reads them fast. Long before you could explain your reaction, the set of the eyes, the tension around the jaw and the line of the mouth have already fused into one impression.
That impression forms in about a tenth of a second.
At roughly 100 milliseconds, faster than deliberate reasoning can even begin, the mind has already sorted a stranger into capable or not.
The researchers were not testing who reads a resume well, they were catching a reflex that fires before the thinking brain gets involved.
Why the reflex exists is still argued. The leading idea is overgeneralization, the notion that we apply templates built from a lifetime of watching faces, reading maturity and dominance into them, though that stays a hypothesis rather than a settled mechanism.
Of all the impressions a face throws off, competence is the one that reaches the ballot box. When people are asked what matters most in someone holding office, competence lands at the top of the list, ahead of warmth, trust or likability.
That specificity is the telling part.
In the data it was the competence judgment alone that tracked election results, while ratings of how trustworthy or likable a face looked did not, which rules out a vague sense that voters simply favor a pleasant face. The signal is narrow, aimed at a single trait.
So the question stops being whether the effect is real and becomes what, exactly, that one glance is reading in a pair of candidate faces.
The task was as plain as it sounds. Volunteers saw pairs of real US Senate and governor candidates, winner beside runner up, and pressed a key for the more competent face, with any pair either of them recognized thrown out so prior knowledge could not leak in.
The scores are stubborn.
Competence judgments picked about 71 percent of Senate races in the first study, and held near 68 percent for governors even when the faces flashed for only a quarter second.
A separate round, run two weeks before the 2006 elections, called nearly 69 percent of the governor races in advance.
The strangest result came from slowing people down. Told to stop and think carefully, participants did no better and often slightly worse, their accuracy sliding back toward a coin flip as they deliberated.
Seven in ten is a long way from destiny.
It also means about three races in ten went to the candidate whose face lost the snap test, and nothing in the work says a word about how any winner actually governed, much as a stretch of new solar panels tells you nothing about the farm behind them.
The obvious objection is fame.
Maybe people simply knew the winners, but the effect held even after recognized faces were dropped, and it held whether or not a candidate was an incumbent.
Context bends it too, since other studies show people favor a dominant face for an imagined wartime leader and a softer one when the theme is stability, so a single photo can read two ways, a wrinkle the original competence study did not settle.
None of this makes the snap read a good way to choose a government.
It is a heuristic shaped by group life in a far smaller world than a nation of hundreds of millions, an old rule of thumb misfiring in a voting booth, much like the friction that surrounds an offshore wind project dropped into an old fishing ground.
But the finding does reveal something useful.
The same machinery that sizes up a stranger in a hallway is running while you look at a ballot, an automatic appraisal built to resolve uncertainty in the first instant of meeting someone.
Knowing it fires on its own is the first step toward catching it before it decides for you.
What stays open is whether the signal lives in the face or in the photo. Lighting, camera angle and a held expression all shape what reads as competent, so untangling the person from the picture could push that seven in ten either way, as the follow up face experiments make clear.
We are still a fraction of a second into understanding it.
