European Energy has commenced construction of an AC-coupled 40 MW / 80 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) intended to unlock the full potential of its Mokoan Solar Farm near Winton in northern Victoria.
The 58 MW solar farm has been fully operational since early last year, generating approximately 113 GWh of electricity annually.
Catriona McLeod, managing director for European Energy in Australia, said the two-hour BESS, which will share the same grid connection as the solar farm, is expected to commence operations by the middle of next year, adding that battery energy storage is a key element of the company’s development strategy.
“Batteries are crucial for EE and the whole industry,” she said. “They will truly unlock the full potential of wind and solar and provide more renewable energy when it’s needed most.”
“We’ll be doing a lot in this space in the back end of 2026 and into 2027 so there are plenty more announcements to come.”
Financial close on the battery project was achieved last month after German lender Deutsche Bank provided a non-recourse package to refinance the existing debt on the solar farm and to support construction and operation of the battery.
The progress on the Mokoan battery project follows European Energy’s recent announcement of financial close for the Winton North Solar Farm with battery project.
Both the Winton North and Mokoan solar farms are backed by a power purchase agreement (PPA) with global technology provider Amazon Web Services.
European Energy Australia currently has a renewable energy pipeline of approximately 10 GW, with projects at various stages from early investigation through to fully operational.
