Gentari Australia, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s state-owned energy company Petronas, recently announced mechanical completion at the DC-coupled Maryvale solar and battery energy storage project in central western New South Wales (NSW).
The project, near Dubbo in the heart of the NSW Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone, includes a 243 MWp solar installation featuring about 400,000 Trinasolar PV panels mounted on a single axis tracker system. This is combined with a 172 MW / 409 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) featuring more than 120 battery units supplied by China-headquartered manufacturer CATL.
Gentari said this integration allows for efficient storage and dispatch of solar energy, enhancing grid stability and reliability.
“The system will offer dispatchable renewable energy by firming its own solar output and dispatching it into the grid when it is most needed,” the developer said in an earlier statement. “Additionally, the system can provide essential ancillary services, which are critical for maintaining grid stability. Together, these functionalities position the BESS as an asset not only for project economics but for overall grid resilience.
Gentari said the mechanical completion milestone is a significant one for the project, marking the end of physical construction on site, with commissioning and grid connection works now expected to follow ahead of commercial operations.
Earlier estimates suggested the hybrid plant will start commercial operations in the second quarter of 2027.
Once fully operational, it will deliver up to 172 MW of dispatchable clean electricity, enough to power about 82,000 homes annually.
The Maryvale project is supported by a Long-Term Energy Storage Agreement (LTESA) awarded under the NSW government’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.
Gentari broke ground on the project in August 2025 with PCL Construction serving as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
