A Chinese automotive glass company has unveiled a glass roof with solar panels to increase range on sunny days, available for all makes and models.
Solar panels are a good solution for maintaining the charge in electric cars , although their development and installation pose a challenge for the industry. At least, until now. A Chinese company has managed to develop a glass roof model made up of several solar panels that help charge the battery . With this patent, they can manufacture glass roofs with solar panels that can be used by all brands.
The company Fuyao Group has designed this glass sunroof. It is the largest supplier of glass for brands like Ford, General Motors, Subaru, Tesla, and the VW Group. It’s not a start-up that presents a novelty, but an established company that It offers a technological solution its customers.


To achieve this, they’ve added solar cells directly to automotive glass and released photos showing a car with a glass roof featuring solar cells that cover the entire top of the vehicle and part of the rear window. This glass roof is manufactured at the company’s facilities in Yangxia and Hefei. These two plants can produce up to three million units per year , and this production may increase throughout the year.
What’s important in this case isn’t the production capacity of these plants, but rather the interest shown by different brands in this technology . Initially, there’s talk that the company is collaborating with BYD to supply this solar roof as an option for the Han and Tang models , although this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

The Chinese company isn’t alone in this innovation, as Nissan also unveiled a Nissan Ariya with a similar roof . In this case, the solar panels provide enough energy to travel an additional 23 kilometers on a sunny day. If the vehicle is in motion, on an 80-kilometer journey that takes about two hours, it can generate enough energy to travel an additional 3 kilometers.

Although it may seem insignificant, it’s important to remember that average journeys are usually only a few kilometers a day , and this can be very helpful in daily life, making visits to the charging station much less necessary.
However, the energy provided by this system is not enough to fill the battery , but rather to gain a few kilometers a day to move around freely and without needing to rush to the charger.
