SolarAfrica closes financing for 342 MW SunCentral – energize.co.za

SolarAfrica has reached financial close on SunCentral 3, securing financing for all three 114 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities comprising the first 342 MW phase of its SunCentral development in the Northern Cape.
RMB and Investec Bank provided the funding for SunCentral 3. The three facilities will supply multiple commercial and industrial customers through wheeling across the national grid.
The first 114 MW facility, SunCentral 1, is expected to begin operating during the second half of 2026.
“With financial close now achieved across the final part of Phase 1, our focus is fixed firmly on delivery,” said SolarAfrica CEO David McDonald.
Located between Hanover and De Aar, SunCentral plans to deliver up to 1 GW once fully developed. The solar PV development intends to serve multiple customers through one-to-many wheeling rather than supplying a single large consumer.
SolarAfrica has already begun advancing Phase 2 of the development with processes and activities underway for SunCentral 4. Future phases are expected to combine utility-scale solar generation with battery energy storage systems to supply renewable electricity beyond daylight hours.
“By pairing solar with battery storage, we can offer our customers a greater share of renewable energy within their overall electricity mix while moving clean energy to periods when demand – and electricity costs – are typically higher,” McDonald said.
SolarAfrica has also completed a R1,35 billion main transmission substation to connect SunCentral to the national grid. The company said the substation will be handed over to the National Transmission Company South Africa and become part of the transmission infrastructure used to connect new renewable generation.
