A homeowner stranded abroad received an unsettling text from the housesitter, with photos showing standing water near their water heater.
With no way to examine the leak personally, the owner went to Reddit’s r/Homeowners community to ask what needed to be turned off right away and whether the situation called for a plumber.
In the Reddit thread, the original poster wrote, “I’m not home, out of the country and as luck would have it, was sent these pictures. Does it seem the leak is from the water heater? What should be done immediately and what following steps need to be taken? Would a plumber be needed? Appreciate your input!”
The strongest consensus in the replies was to stop more water from entering the situation before anything else.
One commenter said, “First step is [to] shut off the water. Second step is to identify the source of the leak.” 
Another added, “At the very least, have somebody shut off the main water and the gas to your water heater.”
A commenter suggested the OP “check for water damage as it might cause mold.”
Someone advised shutting off “the breaker the heater is connected to,” warning that leaving power on could damage the unit or even “ironically cause a fire.”

From the photos alone, several people said it was difficult to tell whether the water heater was actually the source of the leak.
