The Western Australia (WA) government is funding three WA businesses to support five projects that progress development and manufacture of a range of battery technologies and components for residential, commercial, industrial, and defence applications.
The Round 1 allocation from the WA government’s $50 million (USD 35.8 million) Local Battery Manufacturing Program will enable the three successful applicants to develop and test prototypes, purchase advanced equipment and expand production capacity.
Applications include residential energy storage batteries, large community batteries, inverters, and locally manufactured battery components.
WA Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation and Manufacturing Amber-Jade Sanderson said the projects will support local battery manufacturing.
“We’re helping build resilient supply chains, creating highly skilled jobs, and supporting Australia’s transition to a cleaner energy future,” Sanderson said.
The funding recipients include Magellan Powert, which designs and manufactures industrial-grade AC and DC uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, energy storage units, batteries and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
Adarsh Investments is a WA-owned and operated manufacturer, fabricator and importer of component parts, and ProtoLab Manufacturing produces electronics solutions.
Funding streams under the WA Local Battery Manufacturing Program includes a production-ready stream, which provides up to $100,000 in matched funding to businesses for projects in three categories of pre-production activities.
The production scale-up stream provides up to $5 million in matched funding to existing battery manufacturers for projects that scale-up their operations, including through purchase of capital equipment, workforce training, costs associated with upgrading existing or new premises, and engaging business or manufacturing expertise.
