From Philadelphia's 10,000-panel array to Las Vegas's fully renewable-powered stadium, sports tech is turning NFL venues into some of the country's biggest solar showcases.
Sports tech is going green this football season, as NFL venues increasingly lean on solar power and battery storage to energize the fan experience. From more than 10,000 panels in Philadelphia to a fully solar-powered stadium in Las Vegas, teams across the league are showing just how mainstream solar has become – powering not just homes, farms and factories, but football Sundays too. Here are five NFL stadiums putting solar to work.
More than 10,000 solar panels surround the Eagles' home stadium, producing approximately 4 megawatts of clean energy and supplying about 40% of the venue's annual electricity use. Installed in 2013, the system has since generated more than 32 gigawatt-hours of electricity. Combined with the organization's 14 wind turbines, Lincoln Financial Field now generates over six times the power needed for the Eagles' home games.
In 2023, Allegiant Stadium became the first NFL stadium to run entirely on renewable energy, through a partnership with utility provider NV Energy. That power comes from renewable resources across Nevada, including the 200 MW Arrow Canyon Solar + Storage project, which pairs solar generation with 75 MW of battery storage. The same system supplied the stadium's electricity when Las Vegas hosted Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.
More than 4,000 solar panels are installed across the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Georgia World Congress Center campus in Atlanta. Together, they generate approximately 1,600 megawatt-hours of electricity annually – enough to power all nine of the Falcons' home games – with any excess electricity flowing back onto the Georgia Power grid.
Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, features a 1-megawatt rooftop solar array as part of its commitment to sustainable operations. The installation reflects a broader push at the Gillette Stadium & Patriot Place complex to blend athletic infrastructure with clean-energy innovation.
Home to the Panthers, Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte hosts more than 5,800 solar panels generating up to 1.6 MW of power. The system is projected to offset more than 610 metric tons of carbon emissions annually – roughly equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of 62 homes.
Specific construction costs for each installation weren't disclosed in available reporting, though these systems are typically financed through a mix of team capital investment, utility partnerships, and state or local clean-energy incentives. Across major U.S. sports leagues, 47 teams now operate some form of on-site solar generation, reflecting a fast-growing trend toward renewable infrastructure at game-day venues
