Rocket Lab launches lightweight space solar cell built without critical minerals – pv magazine USA

Rocket Lab Corporation announced the production release of its Inverted Metamorphic (IMM) Apex solar cell, a high-efficiency space power solution designed to eliminate reliance on germanium substrates, avoiding critical mineral supply chain bottlenecks.
For nearly three decades, conventional multi-junction solar cells produced for defense, commercial, and scientific space missions have relied on germanium as a substrate. Recent export controls and raw material consolidation surrounding critical minerals have driven up production costs and exposed satellite array manufacturers to supply disruptions.
By adopting an inverted metamorphic architecture, the IMM Apex cell completely removes germanium from its while delivering a beginning-of-life solar conversion efficiency of 31.5%, said Rocket Lab.
Beyond mitigating critical material risks, the design delivers a 40% reduction in cell mass compared to legacy triple-junction space solar products. The lower mass translates directly into higher a watts per kilogram ratio, allowing satellite builders to reduce launch payload weights.
Rocket Lab said it engineered the cell as a drop-in replacement for heritage germanium-based cells. The direct compatibility enables spacecraft integrators and constellation developers to adopt the germanium-free chemistry without redesigning existing solar array configurations or making major capital investments to retool assembly lines.
“IMM Apex delivers exceptional performance while addressing real-world challenges like rising material costs and supply chain constraints,” said Brad Clevenger, president of space systems at Rocket Lab USA. “With IMM Apex, customers gain access to a high-efficiency, lightweight, germanium-free product that combines proven reliability with faster production times.”
The IMM Apex platform builds on Rocket Lab’s underlying inverted metamorphic technology, which previously powered NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter during its flight campaign on Mars and currently provides power to satellite fleets in orbit.
Rocket Lab is scaling production of the IMM Apex at its Albuquerque, New Mexico, space power manufacturing facility. Targeted capital investments and manufacturing optimizations at the site are expected to support “multi-hundred-kilowatt” production volumes annually to meet rising power demands across commercial megaconstellations, civil space exploration, and national security space programs.
