Production has begun on IMM Apex, the latest version of Rocket Lab’s Inverted Metamorphic solar cell for space. It reaches a beginning-of-life conversion efficiency of 31.5% with 40% lower cell mass, raising specific power in watts per kilogram while holding radiation hardness and performance over temperature. The cell drops the germanium substrate used in conventional multi-junction cells for the past three decades, which Rocket Lab says mitigates the rising costs and supply constraints facing the space power industry. It is a mechanical and electrical drop-in replacement for heritage germanium cells, so customers need no re-tooling. The IMM line has had more than a decade of testing and qualification and powered NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter. IMM Apex is available now and is made in multi-100-kilowatt volumes.
