Brazil recorded 891MW of newly installed utility-scale solar photovoltaic capacity in August 2026, based on data from the country’s regulatory agency, the National Electricity Agency (ANEEL), as reported by pv-tech.org/brazil-installs-891mw-utility-scale-solar-pv-in-august” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow noopener”>pv-tech.org. Solar PV represented close to half of the roughly 2GW of new utility-scale capacity brought online during the month and accounted for the majority of new power plants entering operation, with 15 of 20 facilities.
Through the end of August, solar PV made the largest contribution to the grid, supplying 3.5GW of the 4.8GW of new installed capacity added this year. Utility-scale solar PV additions have already exceeded the full-year total recorded in 2025, when Brazil added 2.8GW of utility-scale solar PV alongside 8.8GW of distributed generation.
On a cumulative basis, utility-scale solar PV reached 23.6GW as of 8 September 2026, according to ANEEL data, equivalent to slightly more than 10% of Brazil’s total installed capacity across all technologies. Separate data from trade body ABSOLAR put total installed solar PV in the country at 76.6GW at the end of August 2026. ABSOLAR’s figures cover both utility-scale and distributed solar, with distributed generation substantially exceeding utility-scale in Brazil.
An additional 32 projects totaling 1.5GW of utility-scale solar PV are under construction, accounting for 17% of all new power generation capacity currently being built. Among projects still under development, solar PV represents 81% of total capacity, at 70.8GW.
Brazil remains one of the largest solar PV markets globally, both by cumulative installed capacity and annual installations at the end of 2025. Data from trade body SolarPower Europe (SPE) ranked the Latin American country fifth and sixth in those categories, respectively. SPE also forecasts that Brazil will add 67GW of new solar PV capacity over the next five years, trailing only China, India, the United States and Germany.
One of the main challenges facing the country is solar PV curtailment, which continues to rise and is expected to worsen in the coming years because of a government bill mandating 2.5GW of new gas-fired power plants. A recent analysis from Aurora Energy Research projected a 12% increase in curtailment for renewable energy plants as a result of that mandate, once the gas-fired plants are commissioned by 2032.
