The cumulative electric capacity of all grid-connected photovoltaic systems in Germany amounted in 2025 to around ***** gigawatt-peak. Bavaria is by far the federal state with the most installed capacity, followed by Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia. The city-states Bremen, Hamburg, and Berlin have the lowest nameplate capacity for photovoltaic systems.
The conversion of light energy into electrical energy using solar cells describes electricity generation by photovoltaic systems. In Germany, the installed capacity of photovoltaic systems is steadily increasing. This development is also visible globally: about one quarter of the total installed capacity worldwide is located in China. It is followed by the United States, Japan, and India, which have significantly less installed photovoltaic capacity in comparison.
Alongside photovoltaics, hydropower is also among the renewable energy sources. In Germany, wind energy is particularly important. Compared with other European countries, electricity generation from wind energy is highest here, in a European comparison. They are followed at a distance by Spain and France.
