Price estimates varied sharply, depending on whether the generator worked. In uncertain, non-running condition, some commenters said it might bring a few hundred dollars, while a cleaned-up unit that functions properly could land $500 to $1,000, depending on its condition and fuel options.
“Five years sitting in a garage doesn’t necessarily mean it’s done, but I’d check the oil, fuel system, battery, wiring, and rust before trying to run it,” one user wrote.
Another user said: “Wincos are good, quality generators and this one appears to be set up for tri-fuel operation. It’s possible it will start as is if there was never any gasoline in it. If there was, the old gas has probably gummed up the carb, tank, and lines.”

Commenters said old generators face a tough resale market because cheap, new models have pushed down what buyers are willing to pay. Several noted that brand recognition alone is not enough and that buyers want proof the unit starts, runs, and produces power.
The thread’s pricing advice repeatedly returned to the same conclusion: that safely getting the generator running was the clearest way to improve its value.
Whether someone is browsing garage sales, scrolling through online listings, or shopping at thrift stores, buying used can save money on everyday purchases and uncover rare or premium items at steep discounts.
There is also the added benefit of reducing waste. Extending the life of a durable product keeps it out of a landfill and reduces demand for a brand-new replacement, especially when the older item is repairable and made with dependable parts.
