Actis, an investor in renewable energy infrastructure, has established Yeltica Energy, a platform focused on renewables in Mexico.
The new venture seeks to expand a portfolio of solar photovoltaic, wind and battery energy storage systems past 2GW, and it presently has three solar-plus-storage projects under development.
Those three projects amount to almost 330MW of solar PV alongside 225MWh of battery energy storage. They were secured through Mexico’s inaugural Mixed Investment Tender, administered by the state utility Comision Federal de Electricidad, which earlier this year allocated over 7GW of solar PV and wind capacity.
Yeltica Energy intends to expand by taking part in additional public tenders in the country and by pursuing proprietary origination alongside developers and offtakers.
Leading Yeltica Energy will be Jose Luis Garcia, who previously served as Latin America chief executive at the Spanish developer Zelestra. Garcia brings over 25 years of energy sector experience; while at Zelestra, he built and divested more than 1GW of renewables spanning Chile, Peru and Colombia. Earlier in his career, he was chief executive of Zuma Energia, a former Actis business, where he developed and built over 800MW of solar PV and wind assets in Mexico.
Alberto Estefan, managing director for energy infrastructure at Actis, stated that from the firm’s viewpoint Mexico ranks among the most compelling infrastructure markets in Latin America. He noted that within energy specifically, growing demand and a policy framework seeking to draw in private capital are generating robust opportunities for investors, adding that Actis possesses deep roots in this market and the on-the-ground know-how to construct and run the clean power needed to underpin Mexico’s growth and energy security.
Before Yeltica Energy’s launch, Actis had maintained a presence in Mexico’s energy sector via the formerly owned companies Zuma Energia, Saavi Energia and Atlas Renewable Energy.
The platform’s debut follows by just months the Mexican government’s publication of its 2030 renewables target, under which solar PV is set to represent the majority of new renewables capacity in the years ahead. Mexico’s Renewable Energy Growth Plan calls for 12GW of additional solar PV capacity by 2030, with solar PV generation projected to rise by 140% from 2026 to 2030.
