Manufacturers from two of the world’s largest solar markets, India and the United States, have entered a five-year commercialization partnership to produce perovskite-silicon tandem modules.
The agreement is between California-based perovskite specialist Caelux and Indian module manufacturer Grew Solar, which is based in Gujarat.
Grew Solar will combine Caelux’s perovskite-coated glass with its n-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) technology to create what the companies call “hybrid-tandem” solar modules featuring two energy-producing layers.
The product line will include Grew Solar’s established large-format G12R module series. The companies are targeting 4 GW of production capacity and module efficiencies of at least 29%, with commercial production expected to begin in 2028.
Owned by denim manufacturer Chiripal Group, Grew Solar is a relatively young company that is rapidly expanding in India. It operates a 6.5 GW module manufacturing plant in Dudu, Rajasthan, and is targeting 11 GW of module capacity and 8 GW of solar cell capacity across its operations by the end of the year.
The company plans to expand its manufacturing footprint in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh over the coming months. It also participates in India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which supports domestic manufacturing.
“Partnering with Caelux enables us to provide next-generation, high-power modules to the market using our existing gigawatt-scale manufacturing platform, which is already operating at scale,” said Vinay Thadani, CEO and director of Grew Solar.
Caelux, meanwhile, will use the partnership to extend its presence in India. It already has separate five-year partnerships with Rayzon Solar and Navitas Solar to develop and manufacture a combined 10 GW of perovskite-silicon tandem modules. Those production lines are also scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2028.
Commenting on the agreement, Caelux CEO Scott Graybeal said the company’s strategy of partnering with multiple module manufacturers “means that companies, like GREW Solar, can significantly extend the useful life of their CAPEX-heavy manufacturing assets while offering the market next-generation modules.”
Caelux has now contracted 19 GW of production capacity with solar module manufacturers worldwide for its perovskite technology. In the United States, it is working with Puerto Rico-based module manufacturer Solx on a 3 GW product line scheduled to become available in 2027.
