ES Foundry, a US-based solar cell manufacturer, is joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Initiative for New Manufacturing and putting $1.5 million into it over three years. The commitment follows a 2 GW expansion finished in July. That took the company’s Greenwood plant in South Carolina to 3 GW of annual cell capacity and more than 400 manufacturing jobs. With the scale in place, the research turns to factory AI, automated systems, cybersecurity, digital twins and workforce development. Solar cells remain a gap in the domestic supply chain, with US module capacity leaning on imported cells. Alex Zhu, chief executive of ES Foundry, said running at commercial scale every day shows where technology, automation and workforce development can help.
