Websol Energy System Limited has secured approximately 54.20 acres of land at Falta Industrial Park, Kolkata, from the Government of West Bengal for its planned greenfield solar manufacturing facility. The project will have 4 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity and 4 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity, with the development planned in two phases of 2 GW each.
The land allotment expands Websol’s manufacturing footprint in West Bengal, where the company already operates a facility at the Falta Special Economic Zone. The company said the decision to develop the new facility close to its existing operations will allow it to build on more than three decades of experience in the state, including access to skilled manpower, established supplier relationships and familiarity with the local industrial ecosystem.
The proposed facility will create a larger integrated solar manufacturing base for Websol in eastern India as domestic manufacturing capacity expands to meet India’s growing renewable energy requirements.
Scale-up plans
Websol’s existing manufacturing facility at the Falta Special Economic Zone currently has 1,200 MW of solar cell capacity and 550 MW of module capacity. The company said the new project will allow it to expand manufacturing at a significantly larger scale while remaining within an ecosystem where it already has an established operating presence.

Today, solar is becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s energy infrastructure, and the need for strong domestic manufacturing has never been clearer.
For us, this land allotment represents the next phase of a journey that began more than three decades ago in West Bengal. It allows us to build at a significantly larger scale while remaining close to an ecosystem, workforce and operating base we know well. As India expands its solar capacity, we believe manufacturing must grow alongside it, across regions and closer to demand. This project is Websol’s contribution to building that deeper domestic manufacturing base.”

Manufacturing base
Founded in 1990, Websol Energy System Limited manufactures solar photovoltaic cells and modules, with a focus on high-efficiency cells and modules using Mono PERC technology. The company primarily supplies solar cells to the Indian market, including module manufacturers seeking to comply with Domestic Content Requirement norms, while its modules are sold in India and international markets.
The company’s existing Falta facility can process wafers of up to 210 mm and has an integrated manufacturing model covering both solar cells and modules. Websol said this provides greater control over its supply chain and flexibility in responding to market requirements.
Websol is among the 14 solar cell manufacturers approved under India’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) and is the only ALMM-approved solar cell manufacturer based in eastern India. The company has partnerships with established customers and operates within policy frameworks supporting domestic solar manufacturing and technology development.
The new Falta Industrial Park project will add substantially to Websol’s existing manufacturing base as the company works towards its 2028 capacity and operational targets.
