At this point furnaces/boilers are equivalent to the horse and buggy and heat pumps are the automobile. Cold climate heat pumps easily beat oil and propane, always, no exceptions.
“Heat pump costs vs natural gas costs have been neck and neck, but heat pumps will win in the long term and are certainly more cost effective in the last three years…

Hybrid systems also came up, with some commenters describing setups that use electricity in milder conditions and switch to natural gas when temperatures plunge.
“Definitely take a look at heat pumps,” one commenter advised, while others pointed to dual-fuel systems that rely on electricity only in milder weather.
