Microinverters from Hoymiles, a China-based provider of solar energy and storage solutions, have turned 600 used panels from a Black Forest factory roof into 300 plug-in PV systems in Freiburg. They had worked 13 years on that toothbrush factory roof, yet only around 5% showed defects. Showing that such equipment can serve a second life was the aim of BalkonSolar e.V., the non-profit that organized the event. More than 500 citizens joined in, pairing two used modules with one Hoymiles microinverter and cabling for each system. Hoymiles said that its microinverters suit such reuse because each module tracks its own maximum power point, keeping output steady when old panels differ. The finished systems went free of charge to the citizens who built them, funded by the Solar Summer program of the City of Freiburg. Hoymiles has now backed the initiative for three consecutive years, since first joining in 2024.
