Australian households are driving a clean energy surge that’s displacing fossil fuel generation, and doing it way faster than planners expected, the Renew Economy reported.
That shift showed up clearly in the first half of 2026, when rooftop solar and home battery installations both reached record levels.
More than 180,000 Australian households installed rooftop solar in the six months through June, while more than 276,000 added home batteries, according to Renew Economy, citing the Clean Energy Council’s latest twice-yearly Rooftop Solar and Storage Report.
In all, that amounted to 180,878 solar installs, up 35% from the same period in 2025, and 276,011 battery installs, up 52%.
Battery adoption is now accelerating even faster than solar. The rate came to 153 battery installs per 100 rooftop solar systems. By late June 2026, rooftop solar was in one out of every 2.5 Australian homes, while batteries were in one out of seven.
Adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect your home during outages and save money by storing electricity for use when power is expensive or unavailable. It can also help households move closer to going off-grid when paired with rooftop solar.
Homeowners curious about their options can explore EnergySage for information about home battery storage options, including competitive installation estimates. EnergySage has teamed up with the electrification brand Qmerit to guarantee you get the best price on home battery storage solutions. Another option is Pila, whose plug-and-play batteries are priced at a fraction of what a whole-home backup system would cost.
New rooftop systems contributed 1,894 megawatts of generation capacity in the first half of 2026 — 41% above the same period in 2025 and the largest six-month figure yet recorded.

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.
To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.
Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn’t that worth an email or two?
The June 2026 quarter alone set records across every Australian state, totaling 102,234 installations and 1,079 MW of capacity.
Since January 2019, Australians have installed 21,979 MW of rooftop solar — an amount nearing the country’s remaining coal-fired generation capacity still in operation. The Clean Energy Council report said that illustrates “the scale at which consumers have become the largest single builder of new generation capacity in the market.”
A major factor behind the battery boom is the federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which helped drive first-year battery installs under the program to 457,439 systems and 12.9 gigawatt-hours of storage.
The report also said approved battery models eligible through the rebate rose from 1,259 to 3,406, more than doubling.
Beyond backup power, the Clean Energy Council wants more households participating through virtual power plants, flexible tariffs, and flexibility markets. Those systems could pay people for providing stored electricity during peak demand, absorbing excess solar, and reducing strain on local networks.
The first vehicle-to-grid-capable chargers were approved in Australia during the first half of 2026, opening a path for electric vehicles to function more like home batteries.
Meanwhile, the council is carrying out a Flexibility Value Study. The report says it will identify “policy and market reforms needed to unlock greater participation in flexibility services.”
This battery surge is part of a broader shift in Australia toward pairing rooftop solar with home storage and more flexible use of the grid. These stories look at rebate-fueled battery growth, households selling stored power, New South Wales financing, lower gas use, and virtual power plants.
• Across Australia, a massive government incentive program sparked a battery boom to steady volatile power markets.
• Australian homeowners with rooftop solar are adding batteries so they can sell power back to the grid.
• In New South Wales, interest-free loans for solar are helping households finance batteries and efficiency upgrades.
• Across Australia, the one in 25 homes battery milestone coincided with falling gas-fired power use.
• Battery maker sonnen is pushing the first virtual power plant to pool household storage.
