Australian software giant Atlassian has signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the owners of the Goulburn Community Solar Farm in the New South Wales (NSW) Southern Tablelands, committing to nearly 70% of the project’s output.
The Goulburn Community Solar Farm, owned by the Goulburn Community Energy Cooperative (GCEC) and built across a 2.2-hectare site on the outskirts of Goulburn, includes a 1.4 MW PV facility coupled with a 4 MWh battery energy storage system. The facility, that commenced exports to the grid earlier this year, is expected to generate approximately 2,400 MWh of renewable electricity annually.
Atlassian has now committed to fund almost 70% of the project’s output over the next decade with electricity generated by the facility to help meet the energy requirements of the company’s new 39-storey headquarters being built in downtown Sydney.
First conceived by local residents in 2014, the Goulburn Community Solar Farm is owned by 288 community investors, who contributed a minimum of $400 (USD 278). The project, that secured a $2.3 million grant from the NSW government, is run as a cooperative with energy sold into the grid, providing investors with a dividend while a portion of annual profits is directed to a community fund established to address energy poverty in Goulburn.
GCEC Chair Andrew Bray said the deal with Atlassian provides stability and security for the community project, enabling local clean energy generation to thrive.
“Our active volunteers and investor community worked patiently and diligently across a number of years to see this project come to fruition,” he said. “To have a blue-chip Australian company like Atlassian come on board as a commercial partner is a huge vote of confidence in what we have built.”
Atlassian Chief Sustainability Officer Jessica Hyman said the new PPA means the tech firm’s investment in renewable energy for 100% of its electricity consumption will fund net-new generation rather than drawing on existing sources
“It’s an investment that adds clean power to the shared grid that everyone benefits from, while ensuring Atlassian Central HQ is backed by local renewables from day one,” she said.
Hyman said the partnership with GCEC demonstrates how corporate renewable procurement can move beyond simply matching electricity consumption with renewable generation.
“We’re excited to help build something new and lasting in regional NSW,” she said. “New clean power plus direct community benefit equals a win-win worth celebrating.”
