Homeowners looking at solar-plus-storage options usually come to the same tough question: How much should a midsize setup cost?
“What are we paying for 6.6kW of panels and a decent 20kWh battery these days?” the original poster wrote in a Reddit post in r/perth.
The replies showed that there is no standard price, even for systems that seem comparable.
Adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect your home during outages, save money by using stored solar power after sunset, and even help you get off-grid. If you’re comparing options, EnergySage can help you explore home battery storage choices and get competitive installation estimates. It has also teamed up with the electrification brand Qmerit to guarantee you get the best price on home battery storage solutions.
Another option is Pila, whose plug-and-play batteries are priced at a fraction of what whole-home backup systems cost.
“I just had quotes ranging from $8k to $20k. Will settle for a $12.5k system,” one commenter said. (8,000 Australian dollars is $5,574; 20,000 Australian dollars is $13,936.)
A second commenter noted they financed their 16-kilowatt solar array, paired with a 25-kilowatt-hour Sungrow battery, for $14,000 over 10 years interest-free with repayments of $83 a month.
Someone else said their mom’s system came with 13 kw of panels and 27 kWh of battery storage for $10,000.
FROM OUR PARTNER
Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.
To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.
Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn’t that worth an email or two?
Another user wrote “around $16k,” while a fourth homeowner reported paying about $11,000 after a government rebate for a system with 8.8 kw of panels and 20 kWh of battery capacity.
The array of variables in the solar world is part of the reason there is so much pricing variety. Panel brand, battery chemistry, inverter type, warranty terms, financing, labor costs, and rebates can all affect the final price, sometimes by thousands of dollars.
For some households, though, the appeal is still obvious because of the savings. “We just doubled our solar panels from 10kw to 20kw and added a 36 kWh Sigenergy battery with 25kw three-phase inverter and AC EV charger for $33k,” one commenter wrote. “0ms UPS-like switchover during blackouts and excellent monitoring app and platform. Pricey but our power bill is now almost zero and even on cloudy rainy days solar array still generates 5kw per hour.”
Battery storage can help a home stay powered during blackouts while letting families use more of the solar energy they generate instead of sending it to the grid during the day and buying electricity back at night.
Comparing several detailed quotes may be more useful than looking for a “normal” price.
Ask about the size of the battery and inverter, rebates, financing, and utility access to your battery.
The conversation also touched on adjacent upgrades that could help households use more of their own power.
The user with the 10-year interest-free loan said the savings made it “a no-brainer.”
These articles also cover solar and battery installation, ROI, and savings.
• In New South Wales, homeowners can tap $15,000 interest-free loans for solar, batteries, and upgrades.
• Across Australia, households can save about $4,000 by fixing drafts, ditching gas, then adding solar.
• EnergySage says interconnected factors drive solar pricing, from equipment choices to labor and incentives.
• Energy experts say rooftop solar panels can save households tens of thousands of dollars.
