Solar mini grid to provide reliable power to more than 10,000 people in Kwara, Nigeria – Green Building Africa

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in partnership with Nayo Tropical Technology Limited, the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, has commissioned a solar mini grid in Oke Oyi, Kwara State, Nigeria.
The 581-kW peak capacity solar photovoltaic system is backed by a 1.4 MWh battery storage facility designed to provide stable and continuous electricity to the community.
The project is expected to improve electricity access for more than 10,000 residents, helping to enhance safety, support household activities and improve overall living conditions.
More than 25 local businesses are also set to benefit from a more reliable power supply. Access to dependable electricity could help enterprises expand their operations, improve productivity and create sustainable employment opportunities.
The mini grid will supply electricity to more than 15 public institutions, including health facilities and schools. Reliable power is expected to strengthen the delivery of essential services and reduce dependence on diesel generators.
The project is also expected to avoid more than 800 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner energy and contributing to wider climate objectives.
