Australia registered 311.8 MW of small-scale solar capacity in the 0-100 kW range during September 2026, according to the latest report from energy industry data analyst SunWiz. The figures published by SunWiz show a 7.29% rise from the 290 MW installed in the prior month.
The September result ranks among the strongest monthly totals of the year, trailing only the 505 MW recorded in April 2026 and the 320 MW installed in July. It also sits well above the roughly 240 MW registered in the same month a year earlier.
SunWiz Managing Director Warwick Johnston attributed the market’s momentum to the federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Scheme, which requires residential batteries to be installed together with new or existing solar systems in order to qualify for the rebate. Johnston said the battery rebate has been driving photovoltaic installations, and that sub-100 kW photovoltaic capacity installed in the first nine months of 2026 already exceeds the total for all of 2025. He noted that the January-September tally runs 43% ahead of the equivalent period in 2025.
According to Johnston, five of the eight states and territories recorded higher installations last month. Queensland led with 91.8 MW of newly registered solar, a 14% increase over the August 2026 figure. New South Wales added 90.1 MW, an 11% gain on the previous month.
Johnston described the 10-15 kW bracket as the clear backbone of the market, with 105.94 MW added in September, up 13% month on month. That segment was more than double the next-largest band, 6-8 kW, which reached 53.04 MW, and well ahead of the 15-20 kW bracket at 43.41 MW.
The national average system size edged up to 9.98 kW from 9.86 kW in August. That remains above the 12-month low of 9.35 kW recorded in May but below the December high of 12.07 kW.
Home battery installations reached an estimated 966.5 MWh in September 2026, a 12.5% increase on the 859 MWh registered in August and the strongest month since April’s 3,262 MWh peak. Johnston said the battery market has stabilised near 1 GW a month and noted that average battery size continues to grow, with 45% of the market now exceeding 30 kWh.
The 20-30 kWh bracket remained the largest segment with 368 MWh of capacity registered last month, a 13% increase on the previous month. The 40-50 kWh band delivered 250 MWh, while the 30-40 kWh band accounted for 190 MWh.
Smaller battery categories slowed. The 10-20 kWh bracket eased 2% to 148 MWh, and the 0-10 kWh band dropped 13% to 11 MWh. The national average system size rose to 26.30 kWh, its fourth consecutive gain.
