Solar power generation in Australia reaches new records – Inspenet

The Solar power generation large-scale solar and wind power generation in Australia reached new highs during September 2026 and reinforced the contribution of renewable energy to the country’s electricity system, large-scale solar and wind farms together produced 5.44 TWh of clean energy according to data from Rystad Energy, the volume exceeded the 4.99 TWh recorded in August and represented a 7 % increase compared to the 5.1 TWh generated in September 2025. This progress was accompanied by new photovoltaic production records in several Australian states.
Victoria was the state that contributed the most to the monthly renewable volume, its utility-scale solar plants produced a record of 276 GWh while wind assets contributed 1,250 GWh, the state as a whole reached 1,526 GWh. Photovoltaic generation also reached record levels in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland; NSW’s solar plants produced 841 GWh while Queensland reached 645 GWh the data reflect the growing weight of the photovoltaic installations large-scale within the Australian electricity system, especially in states that concentrate a significant portfolio of grid-connected solar projects.
The increase in production was also accompanied by a year-on-year decrease in solar power cuts in the National Electricity Market (NEM) during September, it was cut back around 22% of available solar generation, compared to 26% recorded in September 2025. This means that a larger proportion of the potential production of photovoltaic plants could be used within the electricity market. Curtailment occurs when a renewable installation has the necessary resource to generate electricity, but must limit its production due to grid or market conditions.
Among the solar plants, Stubbo Solar the facility, developed by ACEN Australia in the mid-west region of New South Wales, led the monthly performance, 400 MW recorded an average capacity factor in alternating current of 35 % the 162 MW Columboola solar plant, owned by Hana Financial Investment, also achieved a capacity factor of 35%. The same capacity factor was recorded by Edenvale Solar Park, a 204 MW project jointly owned by the Japanese companies Eneos and Sojitz.
Stubbo Solar began full commercial operations at the end of 2025, the project also combines photovoltaic generation with agricultural activities through sheep grazing on its land. Recently, some 250 sheep were introduced to the site to help manage vegetation and maintain the land’s productivity. This practice is also part of the soil management measures and wildfire preparedness.
While solar power generation reached new highs, the behavior of Wind energy in Australia it was more moderate. During September 2026, wind power production remained stable or decreased compared to the same month in 2025 in all states except Queensland. Overall, wind power generation fell approximately 86 GWh compared to September of the previous year, at the same time, approximately 13 % of the wind power generation available in the NEM was reduced.
Among the best-performing wind projects, Flat Rocks in Western Australia stood out with a capacity factor of 55 %, followed by Cattle Hill and Granville Harbour in Tasmania, with factors of 49% and 48%, respectively. The September figures show growth in Australian renewable energy production, led by solar generation on a large scale, with new regional records and a smaller proportion of photovoltaic generation cut within the electricity market.
