Doral Renewables, an independent power producer headquartered in Philadelphia, has marked the near-term start of commercial operation for three sites within its Mammoth Solar project in Pulaski County, Indiana, according to PV Tech. The Mammoth South, Mammoth Central I and Mammoth Central II phases each have a capacity of 300MWac, together accounting for 900MW of the project’s 1.3GW total.
The Pulaski County installations were built over an 18-month period. The broader Mammoth project also includes Mammoth North in Starke County. The three phases now approaching commercial operation are agrivoltaics projects, pairing solar hardware with agricultural practices such as livestock grazing and food production beneath solar infrastructure.
The agrivoltaics work is partly tied to an ongoing partnership with Purdue University that was entered into earlier this year. Demonstration zones at the Pulaski and Starke County sites are set aside for research and community impact activities, where researchers can run crop trials and test robotics and advanced monitoring systems.
A US$1.3 billion financial investment raised by Doral Renewables funded the three Pulaski County photovoltaic sites, with the financing announced in 2025. The company broke ground in October 2021 on the first phase of the project, the Mammoth Solar North facility in Starke County.
AEP Energy, a division of American Electric Power, was among the earliest to agree to serve as an offtaker for the sites’ energy. The Mammoth project favors domestic inputs where possible, using trackers from Nextracker and the resources and skills of specialist construction company SOLV Energy.
At the celebration of the Pulaski County operations, Robert Vinje, chief operating officer at Nextpower, described Mammoth Solar as an example of connecting American manufacturing directly to American energy infrastructure, citing Indiana steel made by Indiana workers and built into an Indiana power plant that generates electricity for Indiana communities. He said the company was proud to partner with Doral and Bechtel on a project delivering reliable, high-performance solar generation while creating lasting economic and agricultural value for farmers, families and communities in Indiana.
Doral’s solar and storage development portfolio spans more than 22GW nationwide, including nearly 450MWac in active operation, 900MWac imminently reaching commercial operation and over 1,700MWac under construction. The company operates in 16 states and five electricity markets in the United States.
