Gujarat and Rajasthan accounted for around 55% of combined additions.
India added 35.2 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity and 4.69 GW of wind capacity in the first nine months (9M) of 2026, according to JMK Research.
The research firm said solar installations rose 19.5% year on year, whilst wind additions fell 5.5%.
Gujarat led state-level solar and wind capacity additions, with approximately 12.9 GW installed between January and September. Rajasthan followed with around 9 GW, whilst Maharashtra ranked third with approximately 3 GW.
Together, Gujarat and Rajasthan accounted for around 55% of India’s combined solar and wind additions. The top five states—Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh—collectively contributed approximately 76%.
Citing data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached approximately 299.2 GW as of September 2026.
Solar accounted for approximately 57% of the total, followed by wind at 20%, large hydropower at 17%, bioenergy at 4%, and small hydropower at 2%.
Utility-scale projects accounted for 24.4 GW of the solar capacity added during 9M. Additions peaked at 12.12 GW in the first quarter, before declining to 6.87 GW in the second quarter and 5.4 GW in the third quarter (Q3).
Rooftop solar additions reached approximately 9.8 GW over the same period, with Q3 accounting for around 34% of the total. Cumulative rooftop solar capacity stood at 33.4 GW as of September.
The off-grid and distributed solar segment added approximately 1,041 megawatts from January to September, representing around 3% of total solar additions.
In the wind sector, approximately 1.76 GW, or 37.5% of capacity added during 9M, was installed in Q3 alone.
JMK Research expects India to add another 10 GW–12 GW of solar and wind capacity in the fourth quarter, potentially bringing combined additions above 50 GW for the full calendar year.
