India’s renewable power generation and solar output reached record levels, but those gains were partly offset by curtailments during July and August, a period when the country faced power availability shortages, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air. The Finland-based research group said in a report released on Monday that more than 4% of the solar power generated in July and August had to be curtailed because of grid and operational constraints.
Solar power generation drove 58% of the increase in renewable electricity generation in the second quarter of India’s 2026/2027 fiscal year, according to the analysis, making it the main contributor to renewable generation growth. The research group reported that solar remained the fastest-growing major source of electricity generation in the quarter, rising 39% year-on-year, compared with 29% for wind and 26% for nuclear. Hydropower generation, by contrast, fell 20%.
Solar output set another daily record on September 30, with 705 million units generated, exceeding the previous record set in the first quarter of the 2026/2027 fiscal year. The analysts noted that despite the record renewable generation, substantial volumes of renewable electricity continued to be curtailed because of grid and operational constraints.
About 1.835 billion units of renewable energy generation, mostly solar, was curtailed in July and August, they said. The curtailments coincided with a surge in Indian demand between July and September, while coal plants increasingly operated with critically low inventories. The number of plants holding coal stocks below 25% of normative requirements climbed sharply from 32 on August 22 to 85 plants on October 1, according to the research group.
To address curtailments and the limited flexibility of renewable energy sources, India plans to introduce a regulation from July 2027 requiring developers of solar and wind energy projects to install battery storage at project sites.
