Copenhagen-based Modi Energy has opened registrations in Denmark for a new energy-as-a-service offer. The company installs and owns solar and battery systems on customers’ homes and guarantees bills 20% below the market price of the electricity they use, defined as the spot price without markup plus tariffs, taxes, and VAT.
Modi Energy said the saving appears as a separate line on each monthly statement and lasts as long as the customer keeps both the hardware and Modi as electricity supplier. Electricity contracts carry a six-month binding period and the hardware agreement 12 months, after which both roll over. Removal fees apply during the first five years, and contracts can be transferred to a new homeowner free of charge.
Each home gets 15 kW to 24 kW of solar, typically 24 kW, and 30 kWh to 40 kWh of battery storage.
Modi Emergy plans to trade the batteries in Denmark’s frequency containment and frequency restoration reserve markets as well as day-ahead and intraday markets, alongside optimizing household consumption. The company said spreading revenue across these markets protects the guarantee as reserve prices fall.
Emaldo has itself reported growing competition and declining capacity revenues in Danish reserve markets this year, as battery deployment accelerates. Denmark registered 191 MW of new battery capacity in the 12 months to the end of June.
The company has 50 units in field tests in Danish homes, and its first commercial installations are planned before the end of 2026. Modi runs on the platform of Emaldo, which says it manages more than 10,000 systems in the Nordics and partnered with Twig in August to widen its access to Nordic energy trading.
Modi Energy is led by Steffen Bjerregaard, who co-founded Emaldo and serves as its CEO for Europe. Financing comes from Modi’s owners and Emaldo, along with other financial instruments. The company said it has closed its latest financing round but did not disclose the amount.
Households are a small but fast-growing part of Denmark’s storage market. Residential battery installations rose from 546 to 1,403 over the 12 months to June, though they account for only 12.1 MW of capacity, against 112.4 MW at utility-scale plants. Denmark offers no subsidies for battery deployment, leaving market signals and price volatility as the main drivers, according to board members of the Danish solar association Dansk Solcelleforening.
