New Zealand solar developer Sunergise has partnered with the Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) to establish a framework for installing rooftop solar systems on public buildings across the main island of Rarotonga.
Located approximately 5,000 kilometres northeast of Sydney in the South Pacific Ocean, Rarotonga has a population of approximately 11,000 people who are reliant on diesel generators as a primary power source, and like many Pacific islands is sensitive to global shipping delays, fuel price fluctuations and regional supply pressures.
Formalising a rooftop licence agreement is the first step for the solar systems to be progressively installed across existing public assets to generate renewable energy and aid in reducing the island’s dependence on imported fuels.
Beyond clean energy generation, the installations will support the Cook Islands’ sustainability and renewable energy objectives, which include transitioning all 12 inhabited islands from diesel-fuelled generators to clean solar and battery hybrid systems.
Sunergise will also collaborate on educational opportunities it already delivers elsewhere in the Pacific, to inspire the next generation in renewable energy and STEM.
As suitable sites are identified and assessed, the programme will progress in consultation with stakeholders, ensuring installations are practical, safe and aligned with operational requirements.
